LOWER FLUMENDOSA LAKE

Lower Lake Flumendosa is located between the territories of Nurri and Orroli, in the historical subregion of Sarcidano, within the province of South Sardinia.

Origins and Technical Specifications

Like nearly all lakes in Sardinia, it is an artificial reservoir. It was created between 1953 and 1959 following the second damming of the Flumendosa River.

• Altitude: The dam is situated at 268 meters above sea level.

• Dimensions: The reservoir extends 17 km in length and is approximately 500 meters wide.

• Capacity: It holds 317 million cubic meters of water.

Furthermore, a 6 km long artificial tunnel connects this reservoir to the nearby Lake Mulargia, creating a communicating vessels system.

Geology and Nature

From a geological perspective, the lake is set upon the San Vito Sandstones formation. These consist of ancient metamorphic rocks with a calcareous composition dating back to the Paleozoic era.

The flora is typical of the Mediterranean region, characterized by maquis shrubland and holm oak forests.

Archaeology and Leisure

The area is rich in archaeological sites, the most prominent being the Nuraghe Arrubiu of Orroli, located not far from the dam.

For enthusiasts, it is an excellent lake for bass fishing, known for producing record-sized specimens.
